Windproof Jackets: Advantages and Differences from Waterproof

In fashion and outdoor equipment, the term windproof describes the ability of a material or piece of clothing to withstand wind. Because of this ability, windproof jackets are also widely used by motorcyclists.

However, what exactly is meant by windproof? What are the advantages of using a windproof jacket? And how is it different from waterproof? Come read it in full here.

Knowing Windproof Material and Its Advantages

Windproof is the property of a material that cannot be penetrated by wind. So, for fashion or clothing, windproof materials are designed to prevent wind from penetrating the fabric, thereby keeping the body temperature stable and comfortable even in a windy environment.

Wearing windproof fabric or jackets provides several benefits. The most important is protection from cold winds. Windproof jackets effectively prevent cold winds from penetrating clothes, keeping the body warm and comfortable.

Because it can keep you warm and comfortable, this type of clothing or jacket is very suitable for outdoor activities. So, if you love outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, or mountain climbing, a windproof jacket is the ideal choice to protect your body from solid winds.

Windproof materials are also easy to carry because most are made from light materials, so they are easy to fold. Apart from being functional, many windproof jackets are designed in a modern style, suitable for various occasions.

Difference between Windproof and Waterproof

Even though they sound similar, windproof and waterproof have basic differences:

Windproof

Specially designed to prevent wind from penetrating the fabric, but not permanently waterproof. Windproof materials focus on protection from the wind and are usually more breathable, allowing good air circulation.

Waterproof

Designed to prevent water from penetrating the fabric, thereby protecting the body from rain or moisture. Waterproof materials are often also windproof, but because of the waterproof layer, air circulation can be reduced, causing a feeling of irritation if used for a long time.

Due to their dense construction, many waterproof fabrics also provide windproof protection. However, certain lightweight waterproof materials, such as those used in swimwear or ultralight rain gear, may not offer complete windproofing. Always check the specifications to ensure the fabric meets your needs for both water and wind protection.

Waterproof and Windproof Ratings on Outdoor Equipment

When buying outdoor equipment such as jackets, trousers, or tents, you may often see the terms waterproof and windproof ratings. These ratings provide essential information about how well the equipment protects you in various weather conditions.

Waterproof Ratings Level

Waterproof ratings are measured in millimeters (mm) and indicate how much water pressure the fabric can withstand before water starts to seep through. This measurement is carried out using a hydrostatic head test, where water is poured onto the fabric in a cylindrical column to measure resistance to pressure.

  1. 0–5,000 mm: Water Resistant

Provides minimal protection against light rain or snow. Suitable for daily use in mild weather but not for long-term exposure.

  1. 5,000–10,000 mm: Moderate Waterproof

It protects well from light to moderate rain or snow and is ideal for short outdoor activities such as city walking or cycling.

  1. 10,000–20,000 mm: High Water Resistance

It is designed for heavy rain, wet snow, and long periods of exposure to water. It is perfect for hiking, camping, or skiing in challenging weather conditions.

  1. 20,000 mm and Above: Extreme Water Resistant

It provides the best protection in heavy rain, snowstorms, or other extreme weather conditions. It is often used for mountain climbing, backpacking, or other rugged adventures.

For daily needs, a rating of 5,000–10,000 mm is sufficient for use in urban environments. For outdoor adventures, such as hiking or skiing, select a rating of 10,000–20,000 mm. Then, for extreme conditions, such as exploring in rainy weather, choose a rating of 20,000 mm or higher.

Windproof Ratings Level

Windproof rating is measured using the CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) scale, which indicates how much air can pass through the fabric each minute. The lower the CFM number, the better the wind protection.

  1. 0 CFM: Completely Windproof

The fabric does not allow air to pass through it, providing total protection against wind. This rating is essential for extreme wind conditions or high-altitude adventures.

  1. 1–5 CFM: Very Good Wind Protection

It blocks most drafts but still allows air circulation to provide comfort. It is suitable for hiking, cycling, or running in moderate wind conditions.

  1. Above 5 CFM: Moderate Wind Protection

Letting more air in makes it more breathable, but it lacks protection from strong winds. It is suitable for mild weather and high-intensity activities such as jogging.

From the various levels above, for those of you who want to do high-intensity activities, a rating of 1–5 CFM is a balance between protection and comfort. Meanwhile, for protection against extreme winds, you can choose equipment with a 0 CFM rating for total security.

Understanding the difference between windproof and waterproof clothing is very important when choosing clothing that suits your needs. If you often do activities in windy but dry environments, a windproof jacket is the right choice. However, if you are in a wet or rainy environment, a waterproof coat is recommended. By choosing the proper clothing, you can enjoy outdoor activities comfortably and safely.
